Scandal by Pamela Britton

ROGUE, RAKE, RASCAL, AND GENTLEMAN!Rein Montgomery, the Duke of Wroxly, live as a commoner? His late uncle's will is painfully clear: Rein must survive without his wealth or title in the meanest of London's streets for one month, or else lose his entire fortune. Luckily, his ability to charm the ladies has never failed him anywhere, anytime. And he has his newest conquest in sight: a beguiling market girl named Anna Rose Brooks.

Anna's heart is kind and her intelligence keen, but she's not sure what to make of this dashing stranger lost in the rough district of St. Giles. Is he gentleman or rake? She offers him shelter for one night, but he wants thirty. She tries to keep her distance, but he tempts her to share his bed. She gives in to scandal by becoming his mistress, but he wants her soul. Anna is no fool; she knows the men who come to St. Giles do not often stay. And now she is faced with her biggest fear: that when he leaves, he will take her heart.

RRAH's THOUGHTS AND PONDERINGS:

If there was a list for near-perfect romance books, then SCANDAL, by Pamela Britton, would have to rank right up at the top. Intrigue, romance, humor, drama, and unexpected twists make up this wonderful riches-to-rags and back-to-riches tale that concludes—and all too soon, I might add—with a satisfying Cinderella-like finish.

Rein Montgomery is the new Duke of Wroxly. In order to collect his inheritance, he must survive in the slums of London for four weeks, 1) without telling his friends or family where he is, 2) without telling anyone in the slums who he really is, and, 3) without access to any of the funds or materials belonging to his dukedom. How on earth can an idle, aristocratic gent survive on his own when he lands, literally, in the gutter with nothing but the clothes on his back?

Anna Rose Brooks was once a member of the upper classes, though not of noble ranking. The death of her parents has changed all that, and now Anna's a market girl living in the poverty of St. Giles caring for her addled grandfather. But Anna's not without the hope of escape, and she has a plan. Brilliant and inventive, Anna is about to enter into a competition where she hopes her design for a nautical sail will win her enough to give them a better station in life. However, her plans go awry when she collides—or at least the prototype for her new sail does—with Rein Montgomery's forehead. What ensues is a delightful, page-turning and feel-good love story, mingled with light suspense, fun and memorable characters, and a happily-ever-after ending that will leave you smiling.

Pamela Britton is no longer a rising star in the field of romance: she is a star, and an especially brilliant one. Her talent to continually create such believable and memorable characters has never wavered for me, nor has her ability at giving them so much depth of emotion and flesh-and-blood personality. She continually surprises me, sometimes taking the most mundane or overwritten plot point, and, with a small flick of her pen, turning it into something totally new and unexpected. In SCANDAL she makes me chuckle with her wit, laugh out loud at the scenarios she creates (a scene in the market square between Rein and Anna is absolutely hilarious), and then twists me back into emotional knots as the impossibility of the two lovers' situation seems to become increasingly hopeless.

You may ask why I'm not giving you more of a synopsis here for SCANDAL, and my reason is really simple: you don't need it. Read the back blurb, preorder this book, and then hope that whoever you order it from ships it to you early. Without a doubt, SCANDAL, by Pamela Britton, is one of the most satisfying and delightful romance books I've read this year. It is NOT to be missed!
