ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF A DREAM Author: Sheila Williams ISBN: 0345464753 4/2005 FICTION Publisher: BALLANTINE/One World
How can you not relate to a woman who's lived basically for everyone else—her children, her grandchildren, her men—but now into her 40's, seeks a fulfilling and meaningful life where, for once, her own wants and needs actually matter? How could you not love a main character who takes you along on such an interesting and enjoyable trip? Or a story with so many colors and such a wonderfully diverse range of characters, including an African American, a Lakota Indian and a Swede, just to name a few? There are so many issues that confront Juanita Louis on this neverending journey of self-discovery, that it would take me too long to write them all down. Supported and buoyed by some very wise and compassionate friends, including an eccentric octogenarian named Millie and a truck driving woman named Peaches, all who obviously care deeply for Juanita, they nudge and dish out their small pearls of wisdom whenever the doubts and ties of Juanita's old life seem to suck her back under. Jess, the man who loves her, embodies the qualities we most look for in our ultimate romantic heroes—unconditional love, gentle advice and unending support—an everyday guy who lives each day as it comes, confident enough in his own self worth to encourage his partner to live life the same. ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF A DREAM is a follow up to Sheila Williams' DANCING ON THE EDGE OF THE ROOF, where most of these characters have appeared before. Ms. Williams' writing style and engaging sense of humor will pull you right in—I finished this book in one couple hour sitting. And don't worry, if you haven't read the first book in this set you won't be lost, but I'll guarantee you'll be searching for DANCING ON THE EDGE OF THE ROOF right after you've finished DREAM. Both are well-deserved Top Picks in my book, no doubt about it. Nancy Davis |
