Beauty and the Spy by Julie Anne Long

When a wounded buffalo soldier rides into town, life around Rosewood changes in ways Katie, Mayme, and Emma could never foresee. The soldier is an educated, spiritual man who turns heads and riles the local townspeople. Everyone at Rosewood is taken with him, but one young woman will be especially touched by his gentle presence. Through his encouragement, she will learn to recognize her value as a child of God...and as a lady.

On a nearby plantation an ambitious man plans to do away with evidence of his past indiscretions. Can the Rosewood family save the life of one it holds dear? Or will they be too late?

RRAH's THOUGHTS AND PONDERINGS:

THE SOLDIER'S LADY grabs your heart right from the start. It's touching and sweet and sad and beautiful. I loved it, even though I cried through most of it. I don't think it's possible to love a heroine more than than you'll love Emma. She has such a tender heart and sweet love for the Lord.

This is a story about freed slaves and you have to get used to their language. It makes the reading so authentic. You feel like you're right in the middle of the story; you can smell the earth, taste the home cooking, and feel like a part of the family.

This is also the story about Micah, the buffalo soldier, who comes to town beat up and starving. With help from Emma's family, he recovers his strength. What he gives to them is more precious than life.

THE SOLDIER'S LADY is a Top Pick, a keeper, one I'm sure you'll read more than once.
