After reading Melanie Jackson's THE SAINT, I am kicking myself for not reading her novels before this. She is phenomenal. The creativity and imagination that reside in the pages of this book are astounding. There are things going on here that I have never even thought might happen in a goblin book! Adora is a starving artist, of sorts. She is an author and she is having a hard time finding work after a sickness that left her indisposed for quite some time. When her agent tells her about a gig writing a biography for a man who claims to be Kris Kringle—aka Santa Clause—she figures that this man has totally lost his marbles. But, she is broke and basically has no life, so she figures, why not? If some nutjob wants to pay her 100 grand to say he is Santa Clause, that is exactly what she will do! Kris is a wonderfully perfect hero for our little lost soul, Adora. He is a beautiful, powerful man that has all of the right mojo going on! From the onset, he understands that Adora is inhibited by something that she doesn't understand and he strives to make the transition easier for her in any way possible. Adora has no idea who or what she is, and he intends to keep it that way until he can ease her into her role. Kris has demons (literally and figuratively) clawing at him every moment of the day, and he still manages to come across as a well put together, thoughtful, intriguing man, whose main concern is for other people. Together, Kris and Adora (and her hilarious sidekick, Joy) are unbelievably powerful. Their connection and chemistry left me breathless. Ms. Jackson provides a whole new world, a totally alternate universe for her reader to wrap their mind around—and she does it superbly. My one and only complaint with THE SAINT is that it is the last in its series. Kristal Gorman |
