EVEN VAMPIRES GET THE BLUES Author: Katie MacAlister ISBN: 045121823X 5/2006 PARANORMAL Publisher: SIGNET ECLIPSE
With all of the paranormal romances out there, it's not always easy to know what I'm getting when I pick one up. Most of the time, anyway. However, I can pretty much count on what I'm getting with a Katie MacAlister and it was no different with this current release. Ms. MacAlister's EVEN VAMPIRES GET THE BLUES is the latest in her Dark One novels. And just to get it out of the way, I honestly have to say it wouldn't be top on my list of her paranormals. Not that that's a bad thing—there's always going to be one book that is better than another by an author. Regardless, I enjoyed the book and never felt like I wasted my time in the least. One of this author's talents is being able to bring new characters into the thread of her storyline; fresh and quirky characters creating new twists in her realm of the paranormal. The quirkiness and laugh-out-loud humor of her writing is what keeps me coming back for more—not to mention the not-so-shabby sex. Paen Scott is our Dark One in this novel, a brooding Highlander who swears he does not brood and is perfectly content to never find his beloved. Given a task of do-or-die proportions, his brother convinces Paen to enlist the aid of a failed diviner private investigator, Samantha Cosse. Samantha is half-elf and has a less than stellar record as far as her divining skills go. This is her first case for the new P.I. business she has started with her faery cousin, Clare, who adamantly refuses to acknowledge she is a faery. Once Sam begins to suspect she is Paen's beloved, a fact Paen refuses to acknowledge, the fun really begins. This isn't an intense book. In true Katie MacAlister style, it's just a plain fun read and guaranteed to take the weight of the day away when that's what you're looking for. Sue Cloud |
