Inheritance by Kate Loveday

When Cassie Taylor inherits her uncle's cattle station in Far North Queensland, she decides to capitalise on the exotic appeal of this beautiful and rugged country by adding a tourist lodge to the property. She has no idea of the danger that awaits her, or of the conflict this will create, leading to theft, arson and the near destruction of the aboriginal heritage on Yallandoo.

When a fire partly burns down her cabins, and she receives threatening letters, she knows someone is out to stop her, but she has no idea who, or why. It could be Mark, the dashing, entrepreneurial neighbour who has stolen her heart. Or Stella, a gallery owner, who covets her secret treasures. Or perhaps Ben, willing to do anything for a quick dollar and who ultimately pays a terrible price for his duplicity. Then there are her own workers, including Daniel and old Sam, the elder who must protect his aboriginal heritage at all costs.

And what of Rosie, Cassie's lifelong friend and confidante; is her love for Daniel doomed because of racial prejudice and bigotry?

his is a story of people in all their diversity, with their emotions, their vulnerability, their beliefs and ideals and how these guide their actions. Love, betrayal and greed all emerge, as they seek happiness and fulfillment.

RRAH's THOUGHTS AND PONDERINGS:

Cassie Taylor is left her uncle's cattle station, Yallandoo, when he and her aunt are killed. She's twenty-three and unmarried, and knows little about running a station in the Australian outback. Tom, who has worked for her uncle, agrees to stay on and manage the station. With the help of those she can trust, Cassie learns that what seems to be devotion can sometimes be envy, and those that are nearest aren't always the most trustworthy. This is a mystery, with lots of twists and turns, set against the backdrop of a scenic land.

INHERITANCE kept my attention, despite its overwhelming supply of superfluous information. There were passages in this that had little effect on the story and could have been omitted. Still, the overall tale was entertaining and I very much enjoyed getting a bird's-eye view of life on an Australian station. Reminded me of the Lucy Walker books I read as a teenager. I loved those, and I took great pleasure in reading INHERITANCE.
