Immortals: The Crossing by Joy Nash

For centuries they have walked among us—vampires, shape-shifters, the Celtic Sidhe, demons, and other magical beings. Their battle to reign supreme is constant, but one force holds them in check, a race of powerful warriors known as the IMMORTALS.

For Manannán mac Lir, a musician and Celtic demigod, life had become a blur of post-gig parties, expensive whisky, and cheap sex. And then the baby almost died—a baby he had sworn to protect. On the hunt for the would-be killer, Mac finds Artemis Black, a stunningly dangerous woman who's inexplicably able to intertwine life magic with death magic. For the safety of his people, he should destroy her. But the aching vulnerability in her eyes calls to him. And the raw desire she inspires has nothing to do with a spell. Their love may be forbidden, but Mac and Artemis can't go back once they've made...THE CROSSING

RRAH's THOUGHTS AND PONDERINGS: Top Pick

IMMORTALS: THE CROSSING is a trip to Hell and beyond. Well, for the characters, not for the reader. Nash's latest, the sixth book in the Immortals series, is a fast-paced read with three-dimensional story people.

We've met Manannan mac Lir before, but he's not the scamp he once was. The immortal demi-god was hit with a slice of death magic in the big battle in book four. His appearance has aged and he's tired of his celebrity lifestyle. When he meets a mixed magic witch, semi-human Artemis Black, he's immensely turned on by her darkness. Demons and black magic practitioners have some serious sex mojo going on. Before he knows it, he forms an enduring connection to her and is forced to follow Artemis on her quest after some of the major demons of Hell. I loved how cleverly Nash updated Dante's nine circles of Hell for modern times.

This is a dark story, with a seriously flawed heroine and lots of Hellish ickiness that frankly, I skimmed a bit. But I really like all of Joy Nash's books and IMMORTALS: THE CROSSING is no exception. This series just keeps getting better!
