ME AND MY SHADOW Author: Katie MacAlister ISBN: 9780451228383 11/2009 PARANORMAL Publisher: SIGNET
Penguin might want to re-think their Great Read Guaranteed promotion. Not that MacAlister isn't an author I would expect a great read from, because she most certainly is; but because great means different things to different people. Personally, I find ME AND MY SHADOW to be just okay. It's not great, and it doesn't suck; actually, I would say it's closer to great than not, but just like reviews, great is open to interpretation. Just like always, MacAlister delivers the fun, even in the drama. The characters are engaging, quick, and inhabit a universe that only a genius can imagine. The dialogue is witty, Jim the demon dog is hilarious, and the scenery is beautiful. Following just what is going on, though, especially in the beginning, is tough. I read the first two pages twice to make sure I understood the who, what, and where. I didn't. But once things got rolling, I was hooked. I don't think MacAlister knows how to write a crappy book, so it is probably safe and most certainly nice of the publishers to slap a "Great Read Guaranteed or Your Money Back" promise on the cover. I just hope someone doesn't do just that for the free book.Shannon Johnson |
