Eternal Rider by Larissa Ione
They are here. They ride. The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.

His name is Ares, and the fate of mankind rests on his powerful shoulders. If he falls to the forces of evil, the world falls too. As one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, he is far stronger than any mortal, but even he cannot fight his destiny forever. Not when his own brother plots against him.

Yet there is one last hope. Gifted in a way other humans can't-or won't-understand, Cara Thornhart is the key to both this Horseman's safety and his doom. But involving Cara will prove treacherous, even beyond the maddening, dangerous desire that seizes them the moment they meet. For staving off eternal darkness could have a staggering cost: Cara's life.

RRAH's THOUGHTS AND PONDERINGS: Top Pick

Who in the world would ever think to write an entire series on the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse?!!  I mean, those are the four meanest, baddest, broodiest, toughest around.   Well, Larissa Ione does, that’s who… and she makes me love every single one of them!  In only the first book!

Starting the series with Ares, the god of war, was probably the best idea EVER.  I mean WAR.  Who doesn't love a good, angsty story and a good ol' fashioned conflict?  And his very name is the epitome of conflict and angst.  And boy, oh, boy, the man is every bit as yummy as one would think.  He's cranky and broody and has no time for the silly little human woman who has been thrust upon him.  He doesn't have the capacity in him to care about her or her feelings; he just needs her to help him save all of mankind—whether she likes it or not.

Cara has an awesome story to tell, and I could have read about her for hours and hours. She has had a rough go of things, but she is a fighter, and even all of the weird, supernatural stuff that has suddenly dropped into her lap can't keep her down.  Sure, she is terrified of what is going on, and she has no idea what to make of Ares when she first " meets" him, let alone his siblings.  All of a sudden, she is dealing with hellhounds and ramrods and demons and angels and... Pestilence, the only one of the four horsemen who have gone "bad"—and essentially her reason for being shoved into this world.

The internal war that goes on between Ares and Cara is just as explosive as the external war that is going on all over the world between the three "good" horsemen and Pestilence.  Cara instinctively and begrudgingly leans on Ares and depends on him, because he is all that she knows in this new, scary world she is a part of.  And Ares doesn't have the time, patience, or ability to care about another person's feelings, except that with Cara he finds that he does.  And she makes him feel things he shouldn’t be feeling, some of them things dangerous to both of them, especially because Ares' powers are weaker around Cara.

Larissa Ione is on FIRE with the Lords of Deliverance series!  I could go on and on about ETERNAL RIDER and the entire series, for that matter.  I am so excited about this series, I am like a jumping jellybean waiting for the next one to come out—November 22, 2011. I will be at my nearest bookstore at midnight, impatiently waiting to get my hands on a copy of IMMORTAL RIDER!
