Texas Blue by Jodi Thomas
Gambling man Lewton Paterson wants to marry into a respectable family. After fleecing a train ticket, Lewt makes his way to Whispering Mountain. But seducing a well-bred woman is hard, and Lewt realizes that to entice a McMurray sister, he’ll need to learn a thing or two about ranching—and love.

RRAH's THOUGHTS AND PONDERINGS: Top Pick

TEXAS BLUE is a Whispering Mountain novel, book five, in fact, but is set after the Civil War and features the second generation of Whispering Mountain characters.

The book has two prongs, one featuring the visit of eligible men to the Texas home of three McMurray sisters, the daughters of Jessie Barton from TALL, DARK, AND TEXAN and the other following their cousin, Duck, a Texas Ranger. Eventually the two storylines come together.

The main character of the novel, however, is gambler Lewton Paterson, who is a friend of Duck’s and finds out about the party at Whispering Mountain. Lonely, he decides to impersonate one of the wealthy young men in the hopes of meeting a girl and settling down. He’s an unusual character, desperate to soak up any knowledge and companionship that he can.

He’s not the only one running a con. One of the sisters has set up an imposter in order to avoid the bachelors. But when Lewt realizes he’s not cut out for tea sandwiches and singalongs, he escapes to the stables and meets the hidden sister. Due to her fears of men, they have an unusual courtship.

TEXAS BLUE is a very special, very sweet novel from a master storyteller. One final note: In this novel, the bedroom door is closed.
