THE SIXES Author: Kate White ISBN: 9780061576621 8/2011 THRILLER Publisher: HARPER COLLINS
When I began reading THE SIXES, I knew it was probably going to be an engaging read. After all, I'd read and loved HUSH, another of Ms. White's books. I had no idea I'd fall completely into this story and stay awake nearly all night trying to finish it. It was a pleasant, although tiring, experience! Phoebe is a sympathetic character in that her life is in shambles. She is searching for a way to pull herself back together so she takes a position in a new place, surrounded by new people, and unfortunately, a murderous cloud. A secret society of really, really mean girls called The Sixes pretty much runs the show at the little college, even if their machinations are mostly behind the scenes. With a wealth of intriguing characters and just enough scariness to keep readers on the edge of their seats, this is a perfect summer read. I can see it in beach bags, on planes, and just about anywhere else one might want to escape reality. The best part of this book? The writing, hands down. Kate White's descriptions are vivid and concise, her prose seamless, and her storytelling just too good. I fully intend to read every one of this author's backlist, and I look forward to reading the next thriller she comes up with. Until then, this is another for the keeper shelf! Well done! Kay James |
