His Diamond Bride by Lucy Gordon
Dee Baines is sensible and plain compared to her outgoing, flirty sister. So she's amazed when pilot Mark Sellon chooses to pay attention to her!

Mark has a reputation as a risk-taking rogue who has an eye for the ladies and a thirst for adventure! But quiet, intelligent Dee offers Mark a chance to be…himself. Before he knows it, he is falling for this kind-hearted girl.

Could this unlikely couple forge a love to last a lifetime?

RRAH's THOUGHTS AND PONDERINGS: Top Pick

HIS DIAMOND BRIDE is the prequel to A MISTLETOE PROPOSAL. In the U.S., it is being released separately, but in the U.K. it’s in the same physical book. The story is about the grandparents and extended family of Pippa, the heroine in A MISTLETOE PROPOSAL and is set during World War II London.

Dee Baines falls for her sister’s new boyfriend immediately when she brings him around. A teenage student nurse, Dee becomes Mark Sellon’s best friend. Mark is at her house a lot, despite the stormy relationship he has with his girlfriend, because he gets a job in the family’s mechanic shop. Eventually the relationship ends and the war begins. Mark enlists as a pilot and after some subterfuge by Dee’s mother, is engaged to Dee.

The war is cruel though, and keeps Dee and Mark mostly apart. Mark isn’t exactly a hero by our terms—yes, a war hero, but a great guy, not so much. Still, it’s clear he redeems himself, and this story is the start of a love that lasts a lifetime.

HIS DIAMOND BRIDE is an enjoyable slice of history and romance! I enjoyed the Baines family. The sense of practicality and forbearance despite real trials is very evident.
