A CREED IN STONE CREEK Author: Linda Lael Miller ISBN: 9780373775552 3/2011 CONTEMPORARY Publisher: HQN
Steven Creed, attorney-turned-farmer, just bought fifty acres and an old farmhouse in Stone Creek, Arizona. He wanted his adopted son Matthew, five years-old, to grow up out of the city and live in a small, quiet town. He had enough money that he decided he would do pro bono work for the poorer people in the vicinity. When Steven first saw Melissa O’Ballivan, he didn’t know she was the County Prosecutor, but he definitely liked what he saw. As they became more acquainted, they became closer, until Steven decided to represent Byron Cahill, a young kid that Melissa had sent to prison for manslaughter a few years before. Byron had been driving drunk and on drugs and ended up in a car wreck that killed the young girl in the car with him. Now he was out on bail and was already in trouble. Then they had their first fight. Linda Lael Miller has been a favorite author of mine for years, and books like A CREED IN STONE CREEK is the reason why. The story is a page-turner from the very beginning to the very end. The characters are interesting and strong, though in this story, the five year-old Mat often steals the scene with a typical young boy’s plain speaking and curiosity. He stole my heart right away. Ms. Miller is an excellent writer, and her stories always leave the reader with a smile on their face. A CREED IN STONE CREEK was a very enjoyable read. For the romance reader that also enjoys a little bit of cowboy, you’ll love this novel. It’s a definite keeper! Mariah LeGrand |
