When Maggie Freeman hits Hugh Langley with a rolling pin for trying to accost her, her world turns upside down. When she knocked him down and he hit his head, he died. She was arrested by Sheriff Wells, and taken to the train depot to get her out of town for her own safety. But to her detriment, Vance Bigelow, a U. S. Marshall, was on the train, and Sheriff Wells turned the duty over to him. Now Vance had to see her safely to either jail or freedom, whatever the country judge decided to do. The half-black, half-Scottish marshall was just trying to get back to his ranch in Wyoming, when this one last duty was forced upon him. Could he stand to turn the beautiful, feisty, half-black, half-Kaw Indian woman over to the authorities? Would the justice be fair if he did? NIGHT HAWK by Beverly Jenkins, is an extremely well written novel, with twists and turns in this action packed story. The strong characters led me through some of the towns of the Old West fighting terrible prejudices and nasty ‘bad’ guys. The plot moved right along and kept my interest from the beginning to the end. I sympathized with the hardships the hero and heroine suffered because of their color, and how they fought to retain their dignity throughout. Ms. Jenkins does a good job of showing these difficulties that emanate in their everyday life, and the strength in the characters to overcome them. I thoroughly enjoyed reading NIGHT HAWK and plan to read more by this author in the future. I compliment her on this fine achievement!Mariah LeGrand |
