A Regency Fairy Tale

Their mission—were Allegro and Largo to accept it—was to do the impossible. They were to make Kain Addison, “the Black Falcon,” the earl of Falconwood, fall in love with Phaidra Moore, the incorrigible spinster of Nottingham. Never mind that getting the pair to marry was a feat in itself. Never mind that the woman was a hoyden who made the most atrocious hats and colored them with her own creation, the famous Nottingham Blue. And certainly forget that the earl was atoning for his brother’s death, keeping himself at the fringes of the ton. Allegro and Largo had to make the twosome fall in love! But the Maestro wanted it so, and thus the skinny faerie and the fat one made up their minds—very soon both Phaidra and Kain would be…

RRAH's THOUGHTS AND PONDERINGS:

Phaidra is a 27 yr. old spinster who has given up on ever finding a husband, despite the fact that she is a "Chosen One" and part of the Legacy of Love. The Pixies, who coordinate the love matches of Chosen Ones, finally show up and deem that Kain, the earl of Falconwood is her destiny.

Phaidra believes that the Pixies must be out of their mind - the earl has the blackest heart around - but she trusts in them and tries to make the relationship work. With obstacles from the outset it is not an easy job. Phaidra is a commoner, Kain an earl. She is loyal and flighty, stubborn and trusting. Kain is dark and a loner, unfeeling and ruthless.

When I first started reading this, I really didn't think it was going to work. I thought the idea of pixies in a regency was just too far-fetched and afraid it would be too hokey. I was pleasantly surprised. It was a story that I enjoyed reading. The presence of pixies didn't detract from the story. I found myself wondering not only about Phaidra and Kain, but about Allegro and Largo also.

Even though the pixies were there to guide Phaidra, and sometimes hinder her, they weren't so much a part of the story that you wanted to say "Oh brother, enough of the faeries already!" Phaidra is actually the one who does most of the work here between Kain and herself.

Not a book I would have bought on my own, but I am glad I got to read it. It was a nice change of pace and entertaining.
