TO MARRY THE DUKE
Author: Julianne MacLean ISBN:0060527048 6/2003 HISTORICAL Publisher: AVON
Time Period: London Season 1881
American heiress Sophia Wilson arrives in London in search of an English lord to wed, since marrying a nobleman is one way of gaining the acceptance, which her mother desperately craves, of New York's old society.
James Nicholas Langdon, the "Dangerous Duke," needs money to keep his family's estates afloat, and marrying Sophia seems to be the perfect solution. Their marriage would be a simple business arrangement since Sophia wants his title and he needs her money. The only flaw in James' plan is that after having spent his life learning to control his passions, he now must give into desire if he is to successfully seduce the heiress he needs. An unconventional, genuinely kind American who isn't afraid of breaking the rules of society teaches a cynical Englishman the true meaning of love in this sexy historical. MacLean gives readers a fascinating glimpse of a time when American women were accused of "buying" husbands in England as she fluently blends history into an emotionally compelling love story.

RRAH's THOUGHTS AND PONDERINGS:
I've been waiting for TO MARRY THE DUKE since reading Julianne MacLean's Harlequin Historical ADAM'S PROMISE this past April. She didn't disappoint me, this is another wonderful book.
Sophia adds a fresh exciting touch to the sometimes stale boring English society. She loves James with her whole heart and this love spreads down to his family, servants, and tenants. If I were to compare Ms. MacLean to other authors, her westerns stack up to two other great authors: Cheryl St. John and Carolyn Davidson. Her new Victorian would fit nicely in the bookshelf alongside Julia London, Nicole Jordan, and Adele Ashworth.
It is exciting to find a new author to watch grow and develop her writing skills, which are darn good right now.
