Taming the Heiress by Susan KingAlong the coast of Scotland, they tell the tale of a magical creature from the sea who can take the form of an irresistible man-and seduce a mortal woman. The legend, born in ancient times, still persists in the Victorian Age...

Beautiful Meg MacNeill never thought of herself as an heiress, let alone one of the richest, most eligible women in all of Scotland. Her humble upbringing in the Western Isles, and her secret child--born of a magical night and a mysterious man--make her role in glittering Edinburgh Society as Lady Strathlin seem unlikely, even dangerous. Especially when she comes face to face with her devastatingly attractive enemy--a man who has a foot in both her worlds, and even her past--for Dougal Stewart will threaten her home, her inheritance, and most of all her heart...

RRAH's THOUGHTS AND PONDERINGS:

I did enjoy this book by Susan King, but not as much as I'd hoped to. A more "character-driven" story, and as well-written as it is, I had a hard time with tuning into the depiction and motives of Meg. Here's a gal that's obviously not too bright--if she can make the assumptions she does about Dougal's character and motives after only one brief night on a rock together, in the dark...and when not completely sober--then that only proves her elevator stops a wee bit short of the top. And I found her deceptive at times when I felt she had no motive or justification to be so. Dougal, on the other hand, I liked; he's sensitive, smart, and a man of conviction, both in work and how he conducts his own personal life. The secondary characters were well drawn and likeable as well. As a matter of fact, I'm anxiously awaiting Evan MacKenzie's story in the third book, KISSING THE COUNTESS. Even with having just a small part in TAMING THE HEIRESS, I found his character already overshadowing the others.

There's also plenty of interesting and fascinating historical descriptions about lighthouses and lighthouse architecture, as well as the local flora, fauna and wildlife of the story's setting, but when you can't get characters to connect or feed into each other, it tends to slow and bog down the rest of the story. For me, I'd like to think this is just the warm-up story to her next release in this trilogy, WAKING THE PRINCESS.
